Our Story

Chalk Therapy is owned and operated by Tara Lee and Adam Genge who started the business two years ago out of their home. After being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Tara Lee found her passion for painting and refinishing furniture helped during her recovery from chemotherapy treatments. Once Tara was officially in remission, they expanded to open a store front location.
Adam and Tara grew the business and in two short years expanded again to their current downtown location in the Electric City Works building at 200 Charlotte Street, Peterborough.

Electric City Works is the next step in Adam and Tara’s plan to bring together a community of like-minded artists and makers. Chalk Therapy will be featured in the Electric City Works building and will share the space with 20+ local makers and artists, showcasing incredible artistry and talent all under one roof. This 5,000 square foot, fully licensed space will bring together our community of uniquely talented makers all working and creating together, in The Works.

Tara Lee Genge and Adam GengeOur Mission

Chalk Therapy refinishes, redesigns, and upcycles old, vintage, and antique furniture out of the Electric City Works in beautiful downtown Peterborough, Ontario. We pride ourselves in being an eco-friendly shop, using only VOC-free paints and no-to-low VOC stains. We want to give a second chance to antique furniture and keep it out of our landfills. We love to show you what old furniture can become, create your custom designs, or host you in our workshops to teach you the skills you’ll need for your DIY projects

We want to hear from you!

If you have a piece of furniture that you want refinished, or a piece you’d like to donate rather than take to the landfill, send us an email at hi@chalktherapy.ca including a photo, description, and measurements of the item. At this time, we can only accept donations once we have confirmed directly with you.

A portion of each piece sold goes to local Cancer Care patients, families in need, and local organizations. If you know of a family that could benefit from some of Chalk Therapy’s help, please email us at hi@chalktherapy.ca. We would love to hear your story!
